Howlite
Stone of Stillness | The Calmer | White Wisdom

Dive Deeper
ORIGIN STORY
Howlite was first discovered in Nova Scotia, Canada in the 19th century by mineralogist Henry How — after whom it was named. Naturally white or grey with soft, marble-like veining, it is often dyed to resemble turquoise, but in its raw form, Howlite carries a subtle, serene beauty all its own.
Though it doesn’t have ancient folklore attached to it, Howlite has grown in popularity in spiritual and wellness communities for its profound ability to soothe mental and emotional overwhelm.
FORM & NATURE
Howlite is a calcium borosilicate hydroxide and forms in nodules that resemble cauliflower heads in their raw state. It is considered a borate mineral, typically white with grey veining, though it can be found in greenish hues. Its softness (Mohs hardness of 3.5) makes it easy to carve and polish, and while often used as a turquoise substitute in jewelry, its own energetic properties are deeply valued in healing work.
HEALING BENEFITS
Howlite carries the energy of stillness, surrender, and internal spaciousness. It doesn’t rush in to fix or force — instead, it quietly holds space for release, reflection, and rest. This makes it an ideal ally during times of stress, grief, overstimulation, or emotional burnout.
Emotionally, Howlite is a gentle anchor for those who feel overwhelmed by their own emotional waves. It helps to diffuse reactive emotions such as frustration, anger, resentment, or anxiety by slowing the charge in the emotional body. Not suppressing, but soothing — giving the nervous system the space to recalibrate. It also promotes emotional awareness and the ability to pause before reacting, which makes it particularly helpful for those navigating intense relationship dynamics, healing inner child wounds, or processing emotional triggers.
It gently teaches patience, tolerance, and compassion — especially for oneself. Many find it supports the emotional work of forgiveness, especially where self-judgment or guilt is involved.
Mentally, Howlite is a balm for the overactive mind. It’s especially useful for people prone to rumination, racing thoughts, or sleepless nights, as it invites the mind into a quieter, more receptive state. It encourages mental spaciousness — that pause between thoughts — where insight, clarity, and peace can be felt.
It’s often used as a meditation companion or kept by the bedside to encourage deep rest, lucid dreaming, or mental unwinding after a stimulating day. For students or professionals, it helps organize mental clutter and promote gentle focus without pressure.
Physically, Howlite is associated with supporting the nervous system, muscle tension, and restful sleep. Some energy healers use it to calm the physical effects of stress, particularly in the shoulders, jaw, and head. It’s often recommended for those experiencing insomnia or difficulty letting the body relax into stillness. Its cool, calming energy may also assist with digestive tension related to stress or anxiety.
Overall, Howlite is a stone of gentle unwinding — an energetic exhale for the body, mind, and heart. It brings us back to a state of peace that was never lost, only forgotten beneath the noise.
